William Davis Miners Memorial Day – Springhill

For decades, coal mining was the economic backbone of Springhill – but it came at a grave cost. Three major mine disasters in 1891, 1956, and most famously in 1958 cost the lives of 239 miners in total. Many more were killed in other accidents that have not been recorded. On June 11th, William Davis Miners Memorial Day is observed in Nova Scotia, in honor of these men and many others like them whose lives were lost deep beneath the earth, as well as the families that they left behind. Thank you to organizing chairs Cathy Fisher and Clare Canning for organizing this beautiful ceremony in Springhill.
